GAS PHASE CONTROL OF A POLYMER SLURRY PROCESS WITH A VISCOSCOPE® VISCOSITY ANALYSER

The viscosity of a Polyethylene slurry from a gas-phase reactor, varied too much and couldn’t be controlled precisely, resulting in big lumps of polyethylene and off spec Molecular Weight Distribution.

The ViscoScope® viscosity analyser was installed at an angle of 45° into a horizontal process pipeline. To protect the sensor tip from large lumps, a half circular flow guard with holes in it, was constructed.

Correlation between the laboratory test method (MFI - melt flow index) and the ViscoScope® analyser was 97%! To match the customers requirements, the sensor was constructed with a 3# 400 ANSI flange!


VISCOSITY MEASUREMENT OF BLACK LIQUOR WITH A VISCOSCOPE® VISCOSITY ANALYSER

Black liquor is a by-product of the papermaking process and an important liquid fuel in the pulp and paper industry. Weak black liquor coming from the digester is being concentrated via evaporators / concentrators for combustion. Once the black liquor has reached a solids content of around 75% or more, it is being sprayed into the recovery boiler for steam generation and recovery of chemicals. Above a certain concentration even small increases in solids content of black liquor have a large influence on the viscosity. Measuring continuously in-line provides the possibility to control the viscosity with the temperature and other means. Especially at concentrations higher than 75% viscosity measurement becomes critical. Viscosity and droplet size are closely related. Control of droplet size can enhance the efficiency of the combustion process and the recovery of chemicals. Duplex steel is recommended at increased solids concentrations and the resulting higher temperatures.

Fouling is a known problem with black liquor, therefore viscometers which have moving parts can be major maintenance issue. Marimex’ ViscoScope® does not have any moving parts and is hermetically sealed towards the process. Steam can be used to periodically clean the sensor in-line. No other periodic maintenance or recalibration is required.


MEASUREMENT OF CERAMIC SLURRY WITH A VISCOSCOPE® VISCOMETER

To monitor a ceramic slurry for control purposes, a ViscoScope® viscosity analyser was mounted in the pipeline leading to the mould filling stations. The ViscoScope® sensor was mounted vertically downwards with flow vertically up, to prevent particulate to settle onto the sensor shaft and flange. This way reliability and reproducibility was assured.

The ViscoScope® viscosity analyser measures the viscosity with a torsionally oscillating sensor. The generated amplitude is very small, the energy input into the slurry does not disturb the fragile molecular bonds. One company has utilized the ViscoScope® to monitor the thixotropic behaviour of ceramic slurry. This was accomplished by stopping the flow of the slurry for a fixed amount of time and monitoring the rise of the viscosity during that period. This can only be accomplished, because the measurement does not have any impact on the fluid.

Continuous analysis of the viscosity and viscoelastic properties replaced the costly method of periodic off-line sampling. Initially many laboratory measurements were made to compare the methods. The correlation achieved was proofed to be better than 99%. The continuous viscosity information enabled improvement of important parameters like filling speed, homogeneous cement composition and the settling time of the ceramic slurry in the mould. This resulted in a return of investment in less than 3 months!

Mars Hydrogen Generator

MARS N Series

Mars N is the hydrogen generator which puts together easiness of use and performance. It’s equipped with a Nafion tube dryer with no maintenance and can guarantee 6 bar of working pressure and a purity of 6.0. MARS D Series

Mars D is the generator for more specific applications: its TSA self-regenerating dryer can guarantee the maximum purity (7.0) and 10 bar of working pressure (optional 12 bar). Mars D can be used for metal hydride cylinders hydrogen storage.

Mars generators can be rack mountable, for a perfect integration, with a small surcharge.

Galileo Nitrogen Generator

Galileo Nitrogen Generator produces pure Nitrogen through a PSA air filtration system. The same generator can produce different quantities of Nitrogen, flow rate will vary acccording to purity (see att.2).

Galileo allows having high and constant purity level, guaranteed by the integrated purity analyser (optional - recommended below 1000 ppm purity).

Another feature of Galileo generators is the modularity, which allows the user to add modules in a second moment if Nitrogen demand increases.
